The Why: A Personal Journey
My motivation for transforming professional learning stems from the first hand experience in our small district. I’ve spent years attending professional learning sessions that didn’t meet the needs of everyone in the room. Our K-12 campus consists of two teachers per grade level, all of us sitting together in generic professional development sessions that somehow manage to be simultaneously too broad and too narrow. I've spent countless hours in these one-size-fits-all sessions, watching my colleagues' expressions mirror my own thoughts: "How does this apply to my third graders?" while high school teachers wonder, "What does this have to do with my AP Physics class?"
The challenge is uniquely personal in our small district context. With such diverse grade levels and subject areas, finding content-specific training that meets everyone's diverse needs seems impossible. Our professional learning often feels like a checklist item, rather than an opportunity for growth. Our teachers deserve better. Our students need better. Let's break the cycle of ineffective generic, professional learning. The reality is that education is rapidly changing across the country. Innovative technologies, research-backed strategies, and instructional models are reshaping how schools operate. The question isn’t whether we need to change—it’s whether we will lead that change or simply follow behind others.

The What: From Vision to Reality
I developed my presentation using a Canva slide show as the final media product. Before I reached this decision, I spent considerable time researching and reviewing the assigned readings to inform my approach. I created an outline to guide the presentation’s flow and experimented with two other platforms before landing on Canva.
Prezi offered creative design options, but it couldn’t be embedded into my Webador ePortfolio platform. Genially had magical features but required a pro subscription to achieve my vision. Canva, on the other hand, proved reliable and user-friendly, allowing me to select illustrations and layouts that enhanced my content.
This presentation embodies my vision for professional development—individualized and tailored to meet teachers where they are. This mirrors by Innovation Proposal, just as we individualize instruction for our students, professional learning should be personalized to help educators reach their full potential.

The How
The development of this presentation involved several phases:
-
Research & Reflection: I revisited the assigned readings and research multiple times to ensure my presentation was grounded in evidence-based principles.
-
Outline Creation: I drafted an outline to ensure the presentation had a logical, compelling flow.
-
Platform Exploration: I explored Prezi and Genially before ultimately choosing Canva due to its ease of use and ability to embed content into my ePortfolio.
-
Visual Design: Using Canva’s “create your own image” feature, I selected illustrations and images that aligned with my message and emphasized key points.
-
Purpose-Driven Content: Every slide was designed with purpose—focusing on relevance, engagement, and empowerment to inspire a new vision for professional learning.
Through this process, I aimed to create a presentation that not only communicates ideas effectively but also models the type of professional learning I believe we should adopt. The time to transform professional learning is now. Let’s make it purposeful and impactful for everyone.
